Silk Colfax Dress :: Dandelion Drift

This is the first time I’ve sewn with silk and I was a little bit intimidated at first.  All of my worries were unwarranted though, and sewing with silk turned out to be a lot of fun!

Happy Weekend Sewing Friends!

  • Fenna Bredenhof

    chiffon-type fabric 🙂

  • Rachel

Taking a break right now from sewing with chiffon for the first time. I bought this fabric years ago and finally decided to take the plunge. Slow going but excited

  • Heather

I always fall in love with floaty chiffons and then am afraid to ruin them by sewing badly. Beautiful job on your dress!

  • karen

Silk chiffon graduation dress for my daughter took two machines down!

  • I’ve tackled most of my fabric fears, but I’m absolutely terrified of sewing complicated collars and sleeve plackets. And fitting jeans!

  • Ayelet Barsotti

Chiffon fabric scares me, and the thought of sewing jeans makes me hyperventilate!

  • Heather Feather

Silk, because it was so expensive!

  • Sarah

Linton tweed. Too beautiful and too expensive to mess up

  • Ali M

Vogue 8280, the Galaxy dress “knock off” pattern. Admittedly I have been working on a version for months now, and I probably need to start over with the things I’ve learned in the interim! Thank you so much for the giveaway.

  • Christine Pijpelink Allemeersc

I was nervous to start sewing with jersey beacouse it’s so flexible!

  • jain1023 .

I sew Roxanne top with chiffon collar with no interfacing , and it kep collapsing under its weight. SoI had to sew tacks…. Yack, hate chiffon

  • Natalie

I have a couple of beautiful cuts of silk charmeuse that I haven’t been able to cut into. I LOVE the colfax dress and can’t wait to sew it up! Your version(s) are some of my favorites!

  • yellowkitchendreams

Everything slippy, which isn’t so bad as long as it isn’t very fine; I’ve had more trouble with non-slippy fabrics which are really fine.

I’m still too chicken to sew with stretchy knit fabric! Love your dress x

  • This dress is so gorgeous on you! I was also really nervous to sew with silk for the first time, and also denim! Thanks for the giveaway!

  • Liesel Engelbrecht

Chiffon. I want to, but haven’t tried yet!

  • amy mayer

I am always nervous about sewing with chiffon–it is SO light and flow-y

  • I have been SO NERVOUS to try working with rayon. I have a few patterns sitting in my stash waiting for me to get up the nerve!

  • Nique Etienne

Chiffon, you can see all the seams.
    Thanks for the opportunity

  • I have never sewn with leather – the thought of pushing it through my machine intimidates me!

  • Another beautiful Colfax- you’e on a roll! I’ll admit to being apprehensive about sewing outerwear (and inner wear- bras and panties- for that matter). Luckily I don’t currently live in a place that requires outerwear so I can avoid it (for now!). The innerwear, I really have no excuse!

  • Kathy E.

Beautiful dress and super choice of fabric! I’ve been hesitant to sew with velvet. I have a plush piece of black velvet that I bought to make a pillow, but I’m so afraid I’ll mess it up!

  • Kathy

A winter coat makes me nervous to sew.

  • Karen Caron

Any jeans or pants pattern because I have such a hard time fitting them.

  • Faux leather; it was nerve wracking but practising first made a world of difference.

  • At the moment I’m nervous about altering my wedding dress because of all the beads, lace, organza and chiffon.

  • sewinsteady

I love this dress! I’m super scared to sew with chiffon.

  • Mari

I have a beautiful piece of silk that I’d love to sew up if I ever get over my nervousness! Don’t want to wreck it!
    Mari

  • Slippery silk makes me nervous, too. Great dress!

  • Kris and Dave Hammerbacher

I’m still nervous sewing with knits!

  • Bethany Foster

I’m new to sewing so everything makes me a little nervous. However, I’m branching out into sewing with knits that’s making me especially nervous

  • jules1994

Beautiful dress! I’m still nervous to try any slippery fabrics, like silk.

  • Jessie Stern

I’ve been nervous to try the Ginger Jeans pattern – not because I think it will be hard to sew, I just think it will be hard to fit to my standards!

  • The fabric I’m nervous to sew with is actually the same fabric you used! I bought it from Mood a few months ago, but it’s so nice that I’m afraid to mess it up by choosing the wrong pattern for it. I’m planning on making a shirt-dress, but I’m paralyzed by indecision! (It looks great as a Colfax, but I won’t copy you! 😉

  • Double Gauze. It was a little shifty for me.

  • Susanne

For fabrics I’m going to go with the majority–chiffon-y types. I keep buying them because they’re so pretty but I still haven’t used any yet! I need to start using them if I want to buy more fabric 🙂 Thanks for the giveaway opportunity!

  • Teri

Silk really intimidates me! I haven’t ever sewn with it but I’d love to try it eventually.

  • Keri

I’ve been sewing for well over 30 years and I have yet to sew with silk or chiffon. Anything “fancy” scares me. Fancy can be expensive fabric too. Silly, really!

  • Rebecca Brasher

The thing I’m the most scared of right now is trying to sew jeans that fit. Trying to grade between sizes with a waistband, yoke, and back leg has me a little terrified. They can’t fit worse than RTW though… right?

  • Jessica

Beautiful dress! Uh, I have some silk I’m afraid to even cut into. It’s going to be the most gorgeous airy tank top…one day!

  • Nicole Boyd Shepherd

One year I made this ginormous Santa bag with red velvet and faux fur. I wasn’t sure my machine at the time could take it plus it was sooooo messy! Lint for days!

  • corinnea martindale

I have six yards of gorgeous silk I was gifted and can’t get past the what if I make a mistake stage.

  • Emily

Looks so pretty! I’m afraid to mess up my nani iro double gauze and my liberty of london lawn. As for fabric type probably chiffon.

  • Hannah M

I made a swimsuit for the first time last month and it was scary to get started but I’m glad I did it. It was a lot of work but now I have a swimsuit that I love.

  • Busybuttons

Not necessary real silk, but very lightweight fabrics are difficult for me. I have a terrible time hemming them nicely.

  • Love your dress – I once made a ball gown in purple chiffon for my daughter’s high school formal. Acres of the stuck. She put her stiletto through the hemline on the night…weep!

  • Leanne Krygowski

It’s not really been working with a certain fabric or pattern that scares me… It’s cutting into all that beautiful fabric!!! Eek! For whatever reason, I always hesitate before I make the first cut. I guess have commitment issues!! 😉

  • Andrea D

I’m a beginner sewer, and all the fabrics I sew up are inexpensive to make the learning curve affordable. When I was recently on my honeymoon in Italy, I splurged on four yards of buttery silk that scares me to cut, so I take it out and drape it over my body every once in a while and sigh.
