Do you all follow Project Run and Play? I have followed along silently for years, but this year I am hoping to sew along each week! This week’s challenge was to mix up the Oliver and S popover sundress. It is a free pattern that is available to sew up for a little girl, or her 18 inch doll. While I was trying to think of what to do with this pattern, I pinned a shirt that had a very similar silhouette so I got right to work. If the fabric looks familiar, it’s leftover from an April Rhodes dress I made during the summer. I paired it with this sweet butterfly print up top and decided I wanted to seperate the two fabrics with some piping. I dug through my notions basket and found the perfect zipper, so I decided to use it as piping, just like Kate did with her cute W pants. To make the top, I extended that pattern a few inches and then instead of cutting the front piece on the fold I cut two separate pieces. I also curved the bottom hem in the front. The back piece was also extended again by a few inches to give the top some volume and I gathered the top hem before attaching it to the butterfly print. The shorts were made from Dana’s shorts pattern. I cannot say enough good things about this pattern. I wanted to try it in a knit and here it is! For the waistband, I serged 1 inch elastic to the top waist line, stretching as I went. I then folded it under and topstiched about 3/4 of an inch from the waist line, again stretching as I went. These shorts were amazingly easy…I will definitely be sewing more of them in knit fabric! I think this outfit is going to get plenty of wear around here! Sweet Pea was pleased with both pieces…woo hoo!
