Black and White

Over the past few months, I have been trying to sew a little more for me.  I’m trying to improve my skill.  I want to try more challenging things, sew more challenging patterns, work with more challenging materials.  (Are you getting I want to challenge myself more?)

Well here we go, this outfit is full of things that scared me: fabrics that are difficult, patterns with more difficult things and scary words like yoke and placket.

Circle Skirt – handmade, Chiffon Blouse – handmade, Belt – Lands End Canvas, Shoes – thrifted

For the skirt, I followed Dana’s circle skirt tutorial. Amazingly, I used to be afraid of knit fabric, but not any more.  I really like this skirt,  The drape is amazing and it is extremely comfortable.

The shirt is the Grainline Archer pattern.  I obviously made a few changes here.  The back is exactly as the pattern states (scary yoke and all, which actually is not scary at all).  But on the front I made quite a few changes.  I took out the collar and the button placket and I shortened the sleeves.  I made the front out of three pieces, the left and right sides, as well as the button band and I lowered the neckline.  I really love how this one turned out.

The shirt pattern was not at all difficult.  I actually omitted a lot of the more challenging steps, but chiffon, that was entirely new to me.  I read up a bit about how I should sew with it and then just braved it out!  It actually was not as tricky as I thought it would be.

So this sewing challenge was not actually as hard as I thought it would be.  I think I was psyching myself out, and I am glad I plowed forward!

Nice outfit! I would never have guessed that was an Archer shirt, it looks very cool! I have sewn just a limited amount with chiffon and I thought the hardest part was cutting it.

Thanks! I bought the archer pattern because I knew the sew along would help improve my sewing skills, but I’m thinking this is going to be a great versatile pattern!

I’ve looked at the archer pattern and I agree. It looks very scary. But you did a great job on it.
